Crossing the threshold of death by listening
Audio
2019—2019

The apparent absence of the dying person can be deceptive. After the last heartbeat, clinical death, something of consciousness can remain. The cells inside the body and particularly inside the brain go through a process of decay that can take several hours.

In the process of dying, hearing is believed to be the last sense to go. Research based on electroencephalograms (EEGs) of brain waves indicates that (of course depending on what you are dying from) sound is the last stimuli humans can perceive.

What would you like to hear at the moment of death?

Following this question, I carried out an anonymous survey between December 2018 and May 2019. Here you can listen to an excerpt of the answers. ︎
